Let's Talk Books

I just started reading The Mysterious Benedict Society. It's one of the books that Toni Valshing recommended. I'm only on about the twenty-fifth page, and I'm caught. It's very mysterious and very clever and the main character is a sort of sweet nerdy type. I'll tell you more and I promise t0 write SPOILER ALERT if I'm giving away a part of the plot you might not want to hear. jane

  1. Jane, I was inspired to read The Mysterious Benedict Society by hearing you talk about it. It definitely owes a bit to Harry Potter -- mysterious, isolated school for "special" people; strong and overt good-vs-evil theme; kids with vulnerabilities as prominent as their strengths -- don't you think? I liked the plot surprises and really didn't see any of them coming. SPOILER ALERT: I didn't find the uncovering of Milligan's true identity very plausible, though -- how could the character to whom it mattered most possibly have missed it? I'm interested to read the sequels -- just hope they aren't set on the same island, since being there for close to 500 pages was quite enough. New setting, please!
